Ice Cream That’s Easier on Your Stomach

If dairy bothers you, the problem might not be what you think

“I Love Ice Cream, But It Doesn’t Love Me Back”

If ice cream leaves you bloated or uncomfortable, you’ve probably assumed you’re lactose intolerant — and maybe you’ve given up real ice cream entirely for coconut or oat substitutes that never quite scratch the itch.

Here’s what most people have never been told: for many people, the trouble isn’t lactose at all. It’s a protein called A1.

The A1 Protein Problem

Most conventional dairy comes from cows that produce a mix of two beta-casein proteins: A1 and A2. When A1 protein is digested, it releases a peptide fragment called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7) — and for many people, that fragment is what triggers the bloating and discomfort they blame on lactose.

A2 protein — the original form, the same type found in human milk, goat milk, and sheep milk — doesn’t release BCM-7 during normal digestion. That’s why some people who struggle with regular dairy do fine with goat cheese or A2 milk: they were never reacting to the lactose in the first place.

You can read the full explanation on our Science of A2A2 Dairy page.

Why Our Ice Cream Is Different

Every pint we make starts with milk from our own herd — and every cow in that herd is DNA-tested to confirm she produces only A2 protein, zero A1. On top of the A2A2 genetics:

  • Non-homogenized cream — fat molecules stay in their natural structure, the way your body evolved to digest them
  • Gentle vat pasteurization — preserves the milk’s natural enzymes that aid digestion
  • No gums or emulsifiers — additives like carrageenan bother plenty of stomachs on their own; we use none

Customers tell us this combination is why they can finally enjoy ice cream again. Here’s one of our real customer reviews, exactly as she left it:

★★★★★

“I bought multiple flavors and each one was delicious. The ice cream is creamy and very flavorful. Also the A2A2 milk is gentle on your stomach and after eating the ice cream I did not experience any discomfort. Would highly recommend.”

An Honest Note Before You Order

We won’t overpromise: A2A2 ice cream is still real dairy, with real lactose. If you have a diagnosed severe lactose intolerance or a true milk allergy, this is still milk. But if regular ice cream leaves you uncomfortable and you’ve never pinned down why, A2A2 is genuinely worth a try — many of our customers were in exactly that spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does regular ice cream upset my stomach?

It could be lactose — but for many people it’s the A1 beta-casein protein in conventional dairy, which releases a fragment called BCM-7 during digestion. A2-only dairy doesn’t release BCM-7, which is why many people digest it more comfortably.

Is A2 milk easier to digest?

Many people find it noticeably easier. A2 is the original dairy protein — the same form as human, goat, and sheep milk — and it breaks down without producing BCM-7. Everyone’s body is different, but if A1 protein was your problem, A2A2 dairy typically resolves it.

Is A2A2 ice cream lactose-free?

No — it contains normal lactose. The difference is the protein, not the sugar. Many people who thought they were lactose intolerant find they were actually reacting to A1 protein, but a diagnosed severe lactose intolerance is a different matter.

What makes ice cream hard to digest besides A1 protein?

Homogenized fat (mechanically shattered fat molecules), gums and emulsifiers like carrageenan, and heavily processed dairy can all play a role. Our ice cream avoids all three: non-homogenized, additive-free, and gently vat pasteurized.

Can I try a small amount first?

Our smallest option is the 6-pint box — enough to properly test a few flavors and share with family. See all the box options here.
